The Senate has directed its committee on Youth and Sports to investigate the circumstances surrounding what it described as the illegal appointment of Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim as the new Director General of the National Youth Service Corps NYSC.
The Nigerian army had appointed Brigadier General Ibrahim as the new DG to take over from Brigadier General Suleiman Kazaure, with immediate effect in a signal sent by the Chief of army staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai.
The Senate argued that the posting of Ibrahim as DG of NYSC was unconstitutional as only the President Mohammadu Buhari has the exclusive right to make such appointments as provided for in the NYSC Act.
The resolution followed a point of order moved by Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West Senatorial District.
The matter was referred to the Committee on Youth and Sports to investigate the matter and report back next week.
