National media stakeholders present revised media studies curriculum

A document to review Communication and Media Studies Curriculum in Nigeria Universities has being submitted to the National Universities Commission, NUC.

Presenting the document jointly produced by Media Practitioners and Media Professionals in Abuja, Professor Umar Pate, said the aim is to unbundle Mass Communication Programme and come up with degrees in Broadcasting, Advertising and Film Production.

Professor Pate disclosed that the revised curriculum emphasises on problem solving in the society.

The revised curriculum emphasizes on solving the problems of the society, graduate will be tailored towards societal needs”

“On issue of corruption, the past investigative journalism we have done so much, today most of the things in the curriculum can rarely enable students to investigate matters or even come up with issues”

Speaking on capacity of universities to implement the revised curriculum, Prof. Pate said all universities currently offering mass communication will create faculty or schools that can accommodate the proposed departments of mass communication when the programme is eventually unbundled.

When adopted communication programmes will be run as B.Sc in all universities. A university may opt for certain number of departments intended to adopt not necessarily all of them and then review their Post graduate degree programmes  “Prof.Pate said.

He urged the National Universities Commission to adopt and implement this revised communication and Media Studies Curriculum as the new National guide for communication and Media Professionals in Nigeria.

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Rasheed Abubakar said the commission will commence the review of the curriculum in Nigeria Universities with the issue of media Studies , public relations, advertising, broadcasting, film making, film production, development communication studies, information and Media Studies.

This falls in line with what we have embarked on, this is in line with what we have embarked on in NUC, we started on key goals of reviewing Nigeria Universities Curriculum.”

“The essence is to make our products to be more competitive , make our curriculum more international and more to serve the needs of the industry” Prof. Rasheed said.

The Regional Director of McArthur foundation, Dr Kole Shetima, identified the need to address the challenges of media sustainability.

There is need to get media practitioners to teach in our universities, we need to bridge the gap between the gown and the town, at the McArthur foundation, we identify media sustainability as a huge challenge , we also observed that the media landscape has significantly change as well”

There is production of commercial news hence we saw the need to support this exercise of revised curriculum for media Studies in Nigeria.

Present at the meeting are media Giants such as Former Director General of Nigerian Television Authority, Professor Tony Iredia , Mr Kingsley Osadolor, Professor Idowu Sobowale, Executive Director of News of Voice of Nigeria, Ahaziah Suleiman, Deputy Director of News FRCN, Prof. Ralpheal Akinfeleye Members of RATTAWU, Media Scholars.

The revised Communication and Media Studies Curriculum for Nigeria Universities was reviewed by seventy six media professionals.
