The Nigerian government has reiterated that December 2019, is still the deadline to certify practicing and qualified individuals in the teaching profession.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono reiterated the deadline on Saturday in Abuja while monitoring the 2018 Professional Qualifying Examination PQE, conducted by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria ,TRCN.

Echono noted that despite existing shortfall, Nigeria now have an increased number of qualified teachers who have been trained and certified by the TRCN.

He applauded the large turn-out of would-be teachers who participated in the May first diet of the examination ,saying the council may introduce a third diet to accommodate the increasing numbers of candidates and following the December 2019 deadline.

“we are overwhelmed by the large turn out ,it is a good problem to have, it shows that we have many people coming for the PQE, if we will need to introduce third diet, we will do so, because the deadline is close and many people are now responding to take this exam,” the Permanent Secretary said.

According to him, “one central mode of enforcing the policy of quality teaching and learning in all levels is the PQE because the teacher is at the centre of it all ,we recognize the historical challenge the country had,in the past we didn’t use to have enough teachers so auxiliary teachers ,adjourn teachers and all other people were engaged to fill in the gap ,today we are pleased to note that despite existing shortfall we now have a large crop of qualified people who have been trained and certified ”

He noted improvement in the conduct of the examination and expressed satisfaction in arrangements and situation reports received from other centers.
