Federal Executive Council approves N185.2 billion for roads rehabilitation

Nigeria’s cabinet has approved a contract of N185.2 billion for the construction and rehabilitation of 14 roads across the country. Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina disclosed this to State House Correspondents at the end of the meeting, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said when completed, the roads will help boost transportation network across the country and also enhance the movement of goods and property.

According to him, the roads include Gwoza-Damboa-Gunuri-Ngamdu road in Borno and Yobe States, Mayo Belwa-Jada-Ganye-Toungo road in Adamawa State, Ado-Ifaki-Kotun Kwara State border road in Ekiti State and the repair of Makurdi Bridge in Benue state, among others.

Tobacco Control
Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewale, who also addressed the Journalists, said the Council approved a bill on food safety.

“The Council approved the draft food safety and quality bill as well as the food safety institutional reform working document. With the formal approval of these documents, it is expected that we will have a reduction in the incidence of food borne illnesses through so many preventive controls that are already contained in the bill. It will also help to strengthen institutional capacity for food safety as well as improve information and communication system for food safety in Nigeria,” he said.

The Minister said part of the institutional framework in the bill is to set up a Food Safety Council in Nigeria, to be chaired by the country’s Vice President. Professor Adewale also announced that the Council approved a draft National Tobacco Control Regulation to help consolidate the successes already recorded in the fight against the harmful product.

“Today, the regulation that will enable us to really effectively implement our tobacco control act was approved by the Federal Executive Council,” he said.

Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Okechukwu Enalemah told State House Correspondents that the Council approved the sum of N6.5 billion for the construction of Phase II of a training centre for the Industrial Training Fund ITF.

“The Council approved the award of a contract for the construction of Phase II and the completion of the Industrial Training Fund ITF multipurpose training and conference centre in Abuja in the sum of N6, 540, 385, 908. 00. The importance of this is that, as you know, the ITF is probably the most important agency of government when it comes to vocational training and skills acquisition and Abuja is a very important centre of training for ITF.
