England have ended their ‘penalty-hoodo’ by beating Colombia 4-3 after regulation and extra-time.

In a game that was physical and almost violent, the Three lions took the lead thanks to a Harry Kane penalty kick after he was fouled in the box on 57 minutes.

It appeared the ‘red shirts’ would hang on for a professional win, but Colombian defender Yarry Mina rose highest to nod a corner kick into the net on 93 minutes.

After a non-eventfu extra time, it was down to penalties. Many English fans dreaded the penalty shoot-out, because England had never won a match through this routine on three attempts – 1990, 1998 and 2006.

Both teams had converted their three spot-kicks each. When midfielder Henderson missed his kick, it appeared those ghosts had returned.

But Jordan Pickford saved Colombia’s fourth, leaving Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier the chance to bury England’s last kick past keeper Ospina – and thus bury Colombia’s World Cup hopes.

It was the first time England won a World Cup match on penalty kicks, and the second time in 20 years they have knocked Colombia out of the mundial.

Expectedly English fans have been celebrating this “famous win”, as they now fancy their chances against a still-angry Swedish side in the quarter-finals.
