Some stakeholders of Nigeria’s governing party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Adamawa State have rejected the indirect primary election that was adopted by the Adamawa State government and some members of the party in the state.

Amongst these stakeholders is a former Secretary to the Government (SGF) of the Federation, Mr. Babachir Lawal and a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu amongst others.

In a press briefing in Abuja the former SGF, Mr. Lawal said that his group was not invited to the meeting where the decision to adopt indirect primary was made.

Following the APC National Executive Committee resolution that states could choose between the direct and indirect primary method to elect its candidates for the 2019 General Election on the condition that majority of stakeholders in the state adopt the indirect primary method (if that is the process the state decides on) some stakeholders in Adamawa state met on September 3, and adopted the indirect Primary method.

But Mr. Lawal said that the process was done in secrecy and that not all stakeholders were in included in the adoption of indirect primary.

“ For a long time especially in the days building up to the current political activities, otherwise key and respectable stakeholders in the Party have been increasingly marginalized and Party activities and processes carried out more and more shrouded in secrecy to exclude legitimate interests.

“This policy of exclusion came to a head with the purported meeting of the State Executive Committee convened at the Government house on Monday, September 3, 2018 where Indirect Primaries was allegedly adopted as mode of electing Party flag bearers. That meeting was convened secretly and thus, we the undersigned aspirants, statutory delegates and critical stakeholders were kept in the dark and were not invited. It was therefore a meeting of like minds, persons who are prepared to perpetuate illegality to satisfy the whims of a single individual who has totally lost out in popularity and integrity.

“We, as aspirants, statutory delegates and stakeholders want to unequivocally dissociate ourselves from the purported resolution which was done in bad faith and is bound to affect the image and chances of our great Party in the forthcoming elections.

“The larger majority of the APC family in Adamawa received the news of the adoption of Direct Primaries by NEC of the Party with pleasure and enthusiasm. Our members are pleased that they are going to help the Party in nominating credible, acceptable and marketable candidates to fly the Party’s flag. We, therefore, cannot allow unpopular persons who are afraid of voters to change the rule of the game” Lawal said.

Transparency and Accountability
He added that the APC’s focus to engender transparency and accountability does not create room for indirect primaries hence President Muhammadu Buhari’s desire for direct primaries to be conducted for the presidency.

Mr. Lawal said that his group has written to the APC National Chairman, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole informing him of the situation and further reiterating their desire for direct primaries to be conducted in Adamawa state.

Other members of the group who signed off on the speech were; Senator Ahmed Abubakar Mo’Allayidi, Senator Abubakar Halilu Girei, Senator Bello Tukur, Engineer Marcus Gundiri, Sadiq Muhammed and Dr. Mahmoud Halilu.
